Genealogy of the French in North America

Author: Denis Beauregard

All the early families living in the old French colonies of North America are gathered in a unique database.  Here is the Genealogy of the French in North America, that of their ancestors and often their descendants who moved back to their initial country.

The 2026 release is a new step into the DNA integration. The number of DNA signatures presumed or verified is growing again to reach now over 213,000 yDNA or mtDNA signatures (more than 144,000 with Y or MT, 102,000 with Y and 110,000 with MT). However, with the increase in years disclosed here, there was no extensive search to reduce the number of unknown parents. There is still too many works to do about the DNA data available from the laboratory FamilyTreeDNA.com and 23andme.

The 2026 release includes:

  • More than 192,600 family sheets, sometimes with all the married children (the web site version has only 20,000 sheets)
  • More than 400 sources consulted
  • Nearly all colonial couples known from a marriage record or a marriage contract before 1799
  • The families that settled in Plaisance (Placentia), Terre-Neuve (Newfoundland), Acadia, in the Saint.Lawrence valley, around the Great Lakes and the Mississippi Valley and in Louisiana
  • Foreign origins, sometimes on many generations, sometimes living in Medieval times
  • A new series of presumed Y DNA results

New features of the 2012 release (the software generating the CD-ROM was completely rewritten):

  • Index are now by family name (and the index files are no more included).
  • Family sheets were added for children married after 1780 when their parents were married before 1781.
  • New format for statistics under each family sheet.
  • Family sheets are now provided with a style sheet (base.css) so that techies can change the look of the family sheets.

New features of the 2013 release:

  • All King's Daughters identified
  • Index of King's Daughters and links to their family sheets (they arrived from 1663 to 1673). Number of descendants estimated.
  • Reference lists added (2013b) : Metis, English Captives (preliminary). Number of descendants estimated.

New features of the 2014, 2014a and 2014b releases:

New features of the 2015, 2015a and 2015b releases:

  • Index of soldiers of the Regiment of Carignan and links to their family sheets. Number of descendants estimated.
  • Index of salt-smugglers and links to their family sheets. Number of descendants estimated.
  • First attempt to make the pages compatible with mobile (viewport statements on nearly all pages)
  • There are now more than 20,500 family sheets with DNA signatures.
  • There is now an index for notes found in subdirectory "notes", include unpublished studies.
  • Families before 1691 now completed.
  • Y-DNA signatures have now both nodal notation and the most recent mutation (SNP). Also, it is shown if the haplogroup is detected (based on SNP or mutations) or predicted (based on Y-STR statistical markers).
  • Extended notes for some families are now integrated to the family sheet for an easier access.

New features of the 2016, 2016a and 2016b releases:

  • Added 5 more years of data, 1786-1790, and nearly all marriage contracts (1790 is not complete)
  • Families to BARBET now completed.
  • Added 3 more index : nobility made in New France and Knights of Saint.Louis, and troops of Tracy split from that of Régiment de Carignan
  • There are now more than 26,500 family sheets with DNA signatures
  • DNA signatures are now in green when they are linked to 2 tested persons or more, or in yellow when linked to only one tested person
  • Possible DNA signatures (shown with a gray background) were added. They are signatures from participants to the French Heritage DNA project when there are at least 5 signatures.
  • There are now more than 35,700 DNA signatures

New features of the 2017 and 2017a releases:

  • Families to BARIL now completed.
  • There are now more than 57,100 DNA signatures (28,329 with Y-DNA and 28,852 with mt-DNA)
  • A summary of DNA signatures is now shown in the many lists (names and regional indexes, list of soldiers, etc.)
  • The haplogroups of mtDNA signatures ADNmt were revised, FTDNA switching from build 14 to 17 (phylotree).

New features of the 2018, 2018a and 2018b release:

  • There are now more than 94,200 DNA signatures (36,629 with Y-DNA and 57,647 with mtDNA).
  • The DNA signatures are now at the bottom of pages to make the family sheets easier to read when the signature is very long.
  • A new series of DNA data shown on a blue background when the line is verified but not triangulated.
  • New lists about the immigration of women before 1700: women to get married, enrolled, coming with a family and Acadian not in another list.
  • New lists about the pioneers with a DNA signature (known or presumed).
  • The family sheets have now both mt-DNA signatures (mothers lines) to ease comparison with your results. RSRS is the default value at FTDNA and rCRS is used in many recent studies.
  • The contributors for DNA triangulations are now listed on the site with DNA triangulations.

New features of the 2019 release:

  • The new limit for complete family sheets is 1875 but with data already available and not completed. 1800-1825 is not complete and 1826-1875 includes researches made along my years of genealogy works. Statistics now stops in 1900 to protect the privacy of the DNA tests. A side effect is that the year of the last marriage is no more shown if after 1900.
  • There are now more than 130,000 DNA signatures (59,192 with Y-DNA and 70,840 with mtDNA).
  • If you sent correction requests or new data, they are delayed because of the priority for DNA data.

New features of the 2020 release:

  • Since some information are from a modern census (1850 to 1940), there is now a link to the said census. For an american census, you should connect first to your FamilySearch account (no fee but you must register to see the census).
  • There are now more than 140,000 DNA signatures (63,321 with Y-DNA and 77,217 with mtDNA).
  • The triangulations are integrated to the 408th.
  • If you sent correction requests or new data, they are delayed because of the priority for DNA data.

New features of the 2021 release:

  • There are now more than 149,000 DNA signatures (66,154 with Y-DNA and 82,947 with mtDNA).
  • The triangulations are integrated to the 508th.
  • If you sent correction requests or new data, they are delayed because of the priority for DNA data

New features of the 2022 release

  • There are now more than 162,000 DNA signatures (72,725 with Y-DNA and 89,654 with mtDNA, and over 120,000 with either Y or MT).
  • The triangulations are integrated to the 612th.
  • Many correction or new data were integrated.
  • New lists are under study but not yet available: governors and ancient State officers, notaries, executioners, hired men, militaries, Natives, Blacks (according to the summary of records), slaves

New features of the 2023 release

  • There are now more than 168,000 DNA signatures (74,642 with Y-DNA and 93,538 with mtDNA, and over 123,000 with either Y or MT).
  • The triangulations (DNA signatures verified to a common ancestor, nearly always before 1800, sometimes the New France pioneer), are integrated to the 708th.
  • Many correction or new data were integrated.

New features of the 2024 release

  • There are now more than 178,000 DNA signatures (81,743 with Y-DNA and 96,720 with mtDNA, and over 123,000 with either Y or MT).
