Genealogy of the French in North America

Troops of Tracy

This table is a list of soldiers sent to New France in 1665 with Sieur de Tracy. They came with the Regiment of Carignan but were extracted from four other regiments. The list is limited to people with a genealogical interest, i.e. having a spouse or linked to parents. The reference "cs" is the page and rank of the entry, either as a soldier in a given company or as an individual, to the book Carignan-Salière, 1665-1668 by Michel Langlois. This book also includes a list of presumed soldiers confirmed at the same time as other soldiers or belonging to the Scapulaire brotherhood. The reader could check that work for soldiers not listed here. This list includes regiments other than Carignan while the book Carignan-Salière has biographies only for Carignan soldiers. Also, since this book compares the other lists, references to other authors are not included here so as to avoid confusion with wrong identifications. However, there are also corrections to the liste of Michel Langlois.

The four companies are :

  • Berthier company, regiment of l'Allier
  • La Brisardière company, regiment of Orléans
  • Monteil company, regiment of Poitou
  • Morel company, regiment of Chambellé
This table is built automatically, links included. If the person married once, the link is to his family sheet. If he was single or married many times, the link is directed to the parents, even if only one union produced children. In the current version, all partners are indicated, even if it is a cancelled marriage contract.

General Statistics

Almost any Quebecer with old French roots (before 1700) has at least one soldier from the troops of 1665 in his/her ancestry (but much less were in the troops of Tracy), the question being : how many ? (usually, between 50 and 100). However, some Acadians who moved recently to Quebec may have a completely Acadian ancestry with not Carignan or Tracy soldier.
