French or English (depends on the census taker). Names of places are always in English on the card with the name of the town.


Each census by county (order can be different in each census), town, house, persons in the house. Censuses available for Quebec include:

  • 1666, 1667, 1681, 1760, 1762 and 1765 are all indexed in the P.R.D.H. series (volumes 6 and 46).
  • 1825, 1831, 1842 are nearly never indexed and include only the head of families.
  • 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 are not often indexed and include the complete family and sometimes the place of origin.

Other provinces than Quebec may have different years.

Census of 1911 and next ones will not be published without support from people (write your MP and ask for them to be published). In France, censuses are already availabe until 1968, and in USA, until 1920 (and soon 1930).

Very few index (except Ontario 1871). Concerning Quebec, Archiv-Histo has begun to index the 1851 census, like SGEQ (East of Quebec).
